The objective of this study is to examine the factors affecting member’s participation in unions and consumers cooperatives considering the current status of consumer’s cooperatives in the country, the experience of cooperation specialists and that of other countries. For this purpose 2563 questionnaires was distributed among managers, experts and employess of cooperatives in six provinces (Tehran, Yazd, Guilan, Ardabil, Hamedan and Busheher) as selected by the Ministry of Cooperation in 2009.
Analysis of the data shows that the ratio of men participation is more than women; members have a low awareness of cooperative issues; members’ participation (in terms of presence in annual general assemblies and offering ideas and suggestions) is low although the economical participation has an incremental trend. Members satisfaction with cooperative function (in terms of quality, price and variety of products offered by cooperatives) needs to be enhanced.
